Follow the North Atlantic coastline from Reykjavík into the volcanic and glacier covered wonderland that is Iceland´s south coast. Walk behind the thundering veil of water at Seljalandsfoss Waterfall, take in the incredible views from the top of Skógar-Waterfall, stand on the world famous black sand beach at Reynisfjara and visit the charming coastal village of Vík.

The tour starts with a drive through lava fields, right by the actively volcanic Hengill mountain and then down to the rich coastline farmland. On clear days you will see Hekla Volcano and in the distance the glacier-capped Eyjafjallajökull Volcano will rise majestically above the coastal mountains at its base. Just a few kilometres off the coastline and easily visible are the volcanic Westman Islands, an archipelago of around 15 small islands, one of which is inhabited.

Our first stop is at Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach, which is every photographer’s dream. The powerful Atlantic waves crashing on the black sands, the jagged basalt sea stacks and the huge basalt-column cave are a sight to simply take your breath away.

After being amazed by the power of the sea in Reynisfjara Beach we will head on to Vík. The village of Vík is the southernmost village in Iceland, located on the main ring road around the island. Despite its small size (291 inhabitants) it is the largest settlement for 70 km.

On our way back to Reykjavík, we stop by the the powerful Skógafoss Waterfall where a short walk up a flight of steps will reveal one of Iceland´s most scenic views that includes glaciers, volcanoes and black sandy beaches. We then stop at the 60-metre high Seljalandsfoss Waterfall, famous for the hidden pathway behind and around it.

#### A Whale Of A Tale

“I just want to see one,” said the little boy while clutching his mother’s pant leg and walking along the plank onto the boat. From the first moment you are invited on the boat, the excitement builds. That’s the big attraction with Iceland, you see things in a natural setting. This isn’t Disneyland. The guide of our whale watching trip with Reykjavík Sailors starts listing off the safety rules:

“Rule number 1, don’t do anything stupid–actually, that’s the only rule. It all boils down to that. I want to make it back alive and I’m running on the assumption that you guys do too.”

He goes over the layout of the ship, but after that we’re out on the ocean, searching for whales, birds and whatever we can find. Unless you’re a whale biologist or Faroese whale hunter, it’s not very often you can see a whale breach and hear its lungs blast water into the cool ocean air. Our photographer managed to capture a little bit of our adventure.

Whale Watching In Reykjavík

This beautiful part of our island sits on the other side of the Faxaflói bay, to the North West of the city of Reykjavik and is a location that any diehard fan of Iceland should be adding to their list of things to see. Not only does this location have black sand beaches to rival the southern coast, a national park that could give Þingvellir a run for its money and of course it’s very own glacier but it also has a lot of charm that will be sure to win your heart.

It’s difficult not to recommend a trip around this part of Iceland to anyone visiting the country as, no matter what your tastes are as a traveller, it is almost guaranteed to have something you will enjoy and literary fans will recognise many locations from the Jules Verne novel “Journey to the centre of the earth” that was based here.

Alongside the film, it inspired in 2008 also called “Journey to the Center of the Earth” starring Brendan Fraser which actually used the real Snæfellsjökull volcano in the film.
